About VJD Method

VJD-Method is used in the Indian domestic cricket since 2007 for setting target scores in interrupted cricket matches. Many cricketers including the legendary personalities like Mr. Sunil Gavaskar have rated it as a better system than the ICC preferred DL/DLS systems.

The first version of the VJD method was developed way back in 1998. Mr. V Jayadevan an Engineer from the state Kerala, India, by chance chose the problem of setting target scores for explaining computer programming techniques to one of his colleagues. The program thus emerged was just an improvement over the Australian rain rule which created havoc in 1991-92 world cup. But, by then, the Australian method had given way to the PARAB method developed by a young South African. Seeing the PARAB method and understanding its weaknesses, Mr. Jayadevan devised a two curves method which laid the foundation to the present VJD method. This was in September 1998 and by then the D/L system had replaced the PARAB method in international cricket.

How VJD Method Evolved

  • The two curves are called “Normal score curve” and “Target score curve”. One has to follow the normal score curve for finding the percentage score up to the time of interruption and then use the target score curve to compute the percentage of score to be made in the remaining overs. Later on the “fall of wickets” factor was added to this method. The normal curve depends on the fall of wickets as well where as the target curve is not directly depended on the wickets in hand. Easy to use tables are also developed corresponding to the curves.

  • By 1999, the drawbacks of the D/L system were obvious and teams started openly criticizing its results. Finding his results superior in those controversial cases, Mr. Jayadeavan, in 2000 July got an opportunity to present his work infront of the BCCI technical committee at Pune. Sunil Gavaskar the then chairman of the technical committee BCCI was instrumental in giving him this opportunity. In the same year it was presented in the umpires’ conference at Jamshedpur.

  • Once ICC permitted the use of a completely computerized method, Mr. Jayadevan modified his method by introducing 6 sets of tables in place of the single table in the manual operation method. From the six sets, the computer program can generate 1701 possible sets. It generates the apt one depending upon the score of team-1 (most probable score of team-1 if the interruption is during the batting of team-1). Then this table is used for further calculations.

VJD App Features

VJD system is used in the Indian Domestic cricketing circuit to arrive at a revised target for the interrupted limited overs matches. Tournaments like Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and premier leagues like TNPL, KPL and in many other state run premier leagues use this method. This has proven to be a more reliable system so far and is becoming more popular these days.
